Susan Conway is one of those beautiful persons that as you get to know her you realize she is even more beautiful on the inside. Today she is a highly successful real estate agent and utterly devoted to her three children.
As she was playing with her infant son James, Susan abruptly realized the Virgin Mary was standing in the room watching her. Growing up in a conservative evangelical church, such appearances did not happen! No one she knew believed in the possibility. But, there she was.
Mary said to Susan, “As I held my baby, I knew he would die a horrible death.”
Susan remembered the Bible said, “But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” Did this mean that Mary had a sense of what would eventually happen in the crucifixion? Susan worried that the Virgin Mary was communicating that she did. As unexpected as she had come, Mary was gone.
This experience both startled and inspired Susan. For the first time, she sensed there was much, much more going on in the Christian faith than just showing up on Sunday and being moral. The door had been opened to a dimension Susan had never known. The appearance of Mary was miraculous. Thirty-one-years later that experience came back to her.
James, now a grown man, had gotten himself in a bind. He was struggling financially and his faith had gone south. He owed $4,000 in a building situation and saw no way to pay it back. James was at the end of his rope and didn’t know what to do. Susan’s first concern for her son was that he needed a restoration of his faith. How could that happen?
Susan’s encounter with the Virgin Mary came back to mind. Remembering that appearance of Mary, she began praying for a restoration of James’s faith as well as the resolution of his debt.
Susan’s prayer was different this time. In a new way, she wasn’t simply telling God about a problem. She was focusing divine energy on a need. If the Virgin Mary had been able to perceive the future, Susan reasoned she too might in someway reach ahead into a need that at that moment didn’t appear to have any resolution. With a different focus of her prayer, Susan began interceding for James’s.
On Easter morning, the contractor sent James a note telling him that he was canceling the debt as a witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Not only was James’s financial issue solved, his need for faith was addressed. James was profoundly touched.
Susan knew a miracle had brought a new approach that opened the door.
